Weightloss Tips

Here are some great tips from our friends over at Soul Personal Training in Denver. They are doing amazing work over there. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Don't Believe the Lies

Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth.

That bit of wisdom came from Franklin D. Roosevelt during a radio address in 1939, and though he wasn't talking about fitness, it certainly applies to the following fat loss myths.

Myth #1: Eating Late at Night Makes You Fat

The Facts: Your body doesn't have an internal timer that causes late night eats to be stored directly as fat. Weight gain happens when you eat too much and exercise too little - you could eat too much in the morning, the afternoon, or late at night and it would all result in weight gain.

  • Your Solution: Consider how many calories you eat and burn each day, rather than when you eat.

Myth #2: Snacking Promotes Weight Gain

The Facts: Eating snacks throughout the day is actually a great way to keep your metabolism up and to avoid overeating at meals. However, if you snack on junk food then be prepared to pack on pounds.

  • Your Solution: When it comes to snacking it's all about what you snack on.

Myth #3: You Can Lose Fat Without Exercise

The Facts: Exercise and healthy eating go hand-in-hand when it comes to permanent fat loss. Your body needs exercise just as it needs to be fed a diet filled with fresh produce, whole grains and lean protein.

  • Your Solution: Accept exercise as a part of your daily lifestyle.

Myth #4: Fat Free Means 'All-You-Can-Eat'

The Facts: It's time to close your eyes and mentally erase everything that the 90's taught about fat-free dieting. Fat-free foods are not the equivalent of flavored air – they contain plenty of calories and often lots of sugar.

  • Your Solution: Be mindful of calories when eating fat-free foods.

Myth #5: Eat as Little as Possible for Maximum Fat Loss

The Facts: Eating too little causes your metabolism to shut down and puts your body into starvation mode, and prone to store fat rather than burn it.

  • Your Solution: When it comes to fat loss think burn rather than starve.

Myth #6: Diet Pills Work for Fat Loss

The Facts: The only thing that diet pills are capable of burning is the extra cash in your wallet. Billions of diet pills are sold every year – all to no avail.

  • Your Solution: Healthy eating and exercise can never be replaced by a pill.

Myth #7: You Should Never Eat Fast Food

The Facts: It's all about what you order. Fried, processed and salty foods will cause weight gain - don't order them. Lean meat, salad, vegetables and beans, on the other hand, are available at many fast food chains - order these instead.

  • Your Solution: When eating fast food skip the fried items, stick with lean meats and salads.

Trying to lose weight is often a frustrating experience. In a world filled with quick fixes, lasting weight loss is not something that happens overnight. Remember that it took time to gain the weight, so it will also take some time to lose it.

Permanent weight loss happens as a result of a proper exercise and diet plan - my specialty.

These are some great tips that pregnant women and Moms alike can use in conjunction with their Yoga and exercise routine.

Birth Documentary - Orgasmic Birth - On ABC's 20/20 Last Night

ABC News featured a segment last night on the birth documentary Orgasmic Birth. I was very happy with the outcome of the segment and am thrilled to see the film getting such great attention! The segment discussed birth being enjoyable for some women and how we are "programed" to see birth as painful but some women are choosing to re-program themselves in a sense to enjoy their birth experience. Having seen the film many times and having hosted it in the Denver and Boulder area I would like to add there is so much more to the film other then having an orgasm during childbirth. I think every woman should see this film, it is very conclusive and gives many perspectives.

To see the ABC 20/20 segment please click here.

The show also included a segment on home birth which I thought was confusing but it was nice to see the attention being given to the options women have when giving birth.

gearing up for Orgasmic Birth on 20/20 tonight (finally!).... I may not be exciting but I am dedicated.

Yoga for Your New Year's Resolution

It's that time of year again to say goodbye to the old and welcome a fresh start in 2009! In doing so, many of us will make New Year's Resolutions; A promise to ourselves to work towards something positive throughout the New Year to come. Would you like to become more healthy, maybe lose weight and slim down? How about learning to relax and finding a deeper appreciation for life?

If any of these resolutions sound good to you, you should consider bringing Yoga into your life in the new year. The benefits to practicing Yoga are endless. Some of the physical benefits to practicing Yoga asanas (or postures) include: improving flexibility and muscle joint mobility; strengthening, toning, and building muscles; correcting posture; strengthening the spine; easing back pain; improving muscular-skeletal conditions such as bad knees, tight shoulders and neck, swayback and scoliosis; increasing stamina; creating balance and grace; stimulating the glands of the endocrine system; improving digestion and elimination; increasing circulation; improving heart conditions; improving breathing disorders; boosting immune response; decreasing cholesterol and blood sugar levels; and encouraging weight loss.

Some of the mental benefits to practicing Yoga include: an increase in body awareness; relieving chronic stress patterns in the body; relaxation for the mind and body; centering attention and concentration; self-appreciation and a new found respect for life in general.

Practicing Yoga is beneficial to people of all ages, sizes, and in all walks of life from athletes to overweight individuals, from expecting mothers to overworked professionals, from toddlers to elderly.

In an honest attempt for a healthier lifestyle and brighter future, bring Yoga into your life this New Year.

Losing Weight After Having A Baby

We had a lot of Denver Moms due in November and December, Congratulations! We are very excited to be welcoming this first generation of Belly Bliss Babies :) Please send us pictures!

We often get questions about when it is safe for mom to get back into exercise after having a baby and what exercises are safe. We feel it is very important you check with your doctor before starting an exercise or Yoga program after giving birth. You should consider starting an exercise program when you feel up to it and have recovered from childbirth. Every woman's body is different and every birth is different, it is important to wait till your body is healed before starting exercise. This will also help you get the full benefits from exercise as you will be able to put your full energy and strength into your program. For some moms a few days may be enough time to heal, for other moms a few weeks or months may be necessary.

Of course all moms want to lose their tummy and I often find them over working their abs and neglecting other parts of their body. The best way to loose weight is to do a full body workout building cardio, strength and flexibility. I know we have all heard this before and it is not different after pregnancy, if anything it is more important. You have now had three bodies in the past year and it can be an adjustment working in this new one. Keeping your body balanced and strong is not only important for you to maintain your figure but to also help you take on the demanding lifestyle of being a mom! You will now be carrying a baby with you most everywhere you go, sometimes you will have them on your shoulders, other times on you back or in a sling and other times in a car seat which you will have to carry up the stairs and lift into cars. How does this change the importance of your strength and in what areas of your body? You will also be bending over more, picking things up, laying the baby down, how does this effect the importance of strength in your legs. Building an strong body all over is extremely important for motherhood. The good news is, in getting stronger for these new daily tasks, adding in some cardio and flexibility training you will get you body back, have more energy and be able to cope with your new lifestyle better.

Yoga not only builds strength, increases your heart rate, burns calories and increases flexibility. Yoga is an important part of a workout routine that includes weight and strength training.

After checking with your doctor and recovering it is safe to begin a balanced workout routine. If you were working out or practicing Yoga prior to pregnancy and during pregnancy it may be easier to get back into your routine. If you were not, do not hesitate to start now, it is never too late and you will feel much better for you and your baby!
